Gentle, therapeutic, and calming are a few words that best describe restorative yoga.  This style is the practice of passive healing and is unique in that it encourages physical, mental, and emotional relaxation, a true wellness triple threat. Most people tend to find this style the most therapeutic when compared to that of Vinyasa or Bikram, as you are expected to hold a pose for 5 minutes or more, only performing several poses in one session. By allowing time for longer poses (also referred to as ‘asanas’) and deeper breathing, this yoga style helps elicit our relaxation response.   1. Child’s Pose / Balasana - Child’s pose is one of the most common resting poses incorporated in any yoga style. In order to perform this pose correctly, you must kneel on the mat with your knees hip-width apart, while bending your torso forward enough until your stomach is resting between your thighs. With your forehead on the mat, you will then extend your arms straight out in front or effortlessly resting next to your body. This pose gently stretches the hips, glutes, hamstrings and shoulder muscles, all while calming the mind.
  2. Legs-Up-The-Wall Pose / Viparita Karani - The legs-up-the-wall pose helps relieve tired legs and feet, while gently stretching the hamstrings and back of the neck. To perform this pose, you will position your mat against the wall and place a folded blanket where your head will lie. You will then sit straight with your right hip close to the wall and your legs straight out in front of you. Then as you lay back, you will position your buttocks as close to the wall as possible while sliding your legs up the wall. Rest your head on the blanket and lay your arms out freely beside your body.
  3. Supported Bridge Pose / Setu Bandha Sarvangasana - This backbend pose expands the front body and stretches the hip flexors, while helping ease depression-like symptoms. To perform this pose you will place a rolled up blanket on the mat where your hips will lie, and lay on your back keeping your legs bent and feet grounded. You will then rest your arms out next to your body, and allow your hips and lower back to completely rest on the support.

The best way to summarize the benefits of restorative yoga is that it truly offers a peaceful, relaxed way of exercising and moving the body. It also proves that sometimes doing nothing can be one of the most powerful and healing practices of all.
